Week 04: nice light

This week’s blog is mainly about some nice views, most of which I saw while out cycling or walking along the beach.

One morning I could not go cycling because I had an early meeting at the office. Instead, I stopped on the beach on my way to work for a few minutes. The sun was rising and the sky was truly dramatic:

As is often the case when taking pictures at sunrise or sunset, it paid off to look at what was illuminated by the low sun. Here, the centre of El Campello:

And here, the small sheds used to store equipment:

A few people were also out early, and this dog was having a great time in the sand:

I then looked down and took some semi-abstracts of the sand:

Another example of turning around and looking at what the sun is illuminating:

Now to some food. My son and his wife in New Jersey subscribe to a service from a company Blue Apron. Basically, that company provides them recipes and the corresponding ingredients. My son likes it because it frees him from choosing what to cook and also largely eliminates the need to shop for groceries. I would not use a service like that, especially since they have a Whole Foods next door, but being young busy professionals, they like it. My son e-mailed me one of the recipes, for salmon with oregano-roasted potatoes, aragula and lemon tahini. It was actually delicious (recipe is here), and it is kind of neat to share recipes across the Atlantic:

More food. My daughter likes to bake, and one day she produced this beautiful batch of muffins:

On Saturday, I cycled south to Santa Pola and stopped for a break at the fishing harbour:

The fishermen and their families were out and about:

I walked around for a few minutes, looking at the details of the boats. I guess this fisherman likes to portray his life on land:

The coastal road that leads north from Santa Pola is delightful, providing views like this for several km:

It is still winter, so the beach is almost empty:

A bit later, I stopped at another beach, called Urbanova:

On Sunday, I headed in the opposite direction, to the mountains north of Alicante. I climbed the Carrasqueta pass (altitude 1020 meters). No photos of the views this time, I concentrated on the almond trees, now in bloom everywhere:

I finish with an image from Malatesta, my favourite bar in Alicante where I often stop for a beer on my way home on Friday afternoon:
